No other game in the whole franchise comes close to me, and despite it's flaws, no other game in general has captured me the way Tales of Destiny has. I like both a lot, but Tales of Destiny (specifically the remake) is my favorite game of all time (if it wasn't obvious by my username being a reference to the game).

It really should get a PC port, at least. would definitely be all over a port to modern systems. Abyss was one of the reasons i ended up importing a US ps2 (didnt come to europe on ps2) so i definitely have nostalgia for it, also play it on 3ds a lot.

I think in both cases, their remakes tend to do them better justice in terms of QOL and storytelling improvements.īoth games do a lot of things well and helped to form the franchise into what it is now, though. It's such a bummer it got slotted into 3DS instead of a PC port. The game also did well to introduce a lot of things that are now classic to Tales series tropes, like having a traitor in your party. Your protagonist isn't the ideal knight despite wanting to be, and the actual knight is kind of a rude jackass. Your offensive mage is literally a devout priestess. Destiny does some interesting stuff that wasn't so common at the time-your healer isn't a demure cleric, but a brash and (seemingly) greedy thief. I don't think it's a bad thing, just what you would expect from those character types and classes. That said, I think Phantasia's story works as a more solid piece solely because the characters are very stock in their tropes. I think the plot of Phantasia is a little more put together and consistent, but Destiny was definitely ambitious for being the second game in the series.

while Destiny Remake is better than all versions of Phantasia (and most Tales games in general). In terms of gameplay, I'd say PSX Destiny trumps SFC Phantasia, but PSX Phantasia is better than Destiny.
